Atom smasher restarts to prepare for new science
By ALEXANDER G. HIGGINS, Associated Press

GENEVA – Operators of the world's largest atom smasher restarted their massive machine Sunday in a run up to experiments probing secrets of the universe, a spokeswoman said.

The European Organization for Nuclear Research, or CERN, sent low energy beams of protons in both directions around the 27-kilometer (17-mile) tunnel housing the Large Hadron Collider under the Swiss-French border at Geneva, said Christine Sutton.

After a cautious trial period, CERN plans to ramp up the energy of the beams to unprecedented levels and start record-setting collisions of protons by late March, Sutton said.

The restart follows a 2 1/2 month winter shutdown during which scientists made improvements and checked out the smasher's ability to collide protons at energies three times greater than has ever been achieved previously.

The new collisions are expected to shatter the subatomic particles and reveal still smaller fragments and forces than previously achieved on any collider, including the previous record-holder — the Tevatron at Fermilab outside Chicago.

The Large Hadron Collider was built to examine suspected phenomena such as dark matter, antimatter and ultimately the creation of the universe billions of years ago, which many theorize occurred as an explosion known as the Big Bang.

Big Bang experiment may reveal dark universe: CERN
By Robert Evans

GENEVA (Reuters) – Dark matter, which scientists believe makes up 25 percent of the universe but whose existence has never been proven, could be detected by the giant particle collider at CERN, the research center's head said Monday.

Rolf-Dieter Heuer told a news conference some evidence for the matter may emerge even in the shorter term from mega-power particle collisions aimed at recreating conditions at the "Big Bang" birth of the universe some 13.7 billion years ago.

Man these guys are on drugs.

Every aspect of physics indicate that matter does not just pop into existence.  If it were possible to simulate the "big-bang" it is obvious what the end result would be.  A new universe and the destruction of the old one.  Maybe that's the circle of life!  Life evolves enough to knock itself back out of existence doing strange experiments with big huge toys!  Reset and start over!

The best they are going to do is fart out a bigger kaboom!  This will not fundamentally change ANYTHING because they still have too much of it wrong!

One major aspect of inaccuracy is "Time"!  Time does not actually exist, and treating it like it does only keeps us distracted from the REAL science!

Big Bang investigators want new atom smasher
By EMMA VANDORE, AP Business Writer

PARIS – Scientists behind the European particle collider aimed at uncovering the secrets of the universe pushed Monday to build an even bigger machine — with money and partners from around the world.

Instead of whirling atoms in giant rings, as existing colliders in Switzerland and the United States do, scientists want a new-generation machine that will shoot them straight.

Depending on who wants to host it — and how much they are willing to pay — the next-generation collider could potentially be built anywhere in the world. Japan, Russia, the U.S. and Switzerland are all potential hosts, although scientists from China, India, Canada and elsewhere also will be associated with it, said Barry Barish, director of one of the proposed new collider projects.

So now they want a 'bigger' one to play with.  The one they had, that some scientists expressed risk of blowing up the earth with, wasn't enough!  Roll Eyes

I just hope that hoping is enough.  Undecided

I still can't understand the 'need' for them to know what it is they are even questing to learn.  Can't even see how it will prove anything as a definite as I am sure it would be debated anyway.....and if there IS any risk in what they are doing, is it really worth that risk and the effort and cost?
