One financial doomsday scenario

One financial doomsday scenario
Monty Pelerin

That the US is going broke is no longer a moot point for many. The signs are everywhere; the mathematics too obvious. To understand the latter, see The Continuing Spiral to Bankruptcy, Spiraling to Bankruptcy or Welfare States R.I.P.

The timing and the manner in which this plays out is not easily forecasted. The key point in trying to forecast this particular problem is when and how the politicians respond. No politician ever wants to address a problem that inflicts pain on his/her constituents. Unfortunately, the possibility of solving this problem without inflicting pain is impossible. That option disappeared years ago.

Based on the universal political characteristic -- cowardice -- politicians never take painful actions until forced to do so. Markets will eventually be the force that causes action. The ensuing events will not be neat and tidy. One way or another, the welfare states will be dismantled. Whether this dismantling is partial or total is moot.

After decades of coddling and dependency, the US has created a class of citizens that believe entitlements are a birthright. Several generations have known only this way of life. Public "servants" are a different problem. They live in their own insulated world, divorced from the realities of markets. For too many years they have only seen their numbers expand and salaries increase. To believe that either group will accept what's coming graciously is the height of naiveté.

Chuck Roger in America's possible Greek tragedy makes the following unsettling point:

If attempts to cut education spending can send thuggish teachers' unions into the streets and a tough Arizona law on illegal immigration can send unions and race baiters screaming, what will happen if Washington politicians ever find the spine to do what has to be done to cut Welfare, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and other government handouts?

Can anyone doubt what will happen when these events begin to unfold? Yes, "when," not "if" is the proper term. The US long passed the tipping point for corrective action that does not involve all of the above. So have the welfare states of Europe.

"One" financial doomsday scenario..?

I don't see how riots in the streets of America can be avoided.

Of course I thought the same 25 years ago when contemplating Social Security going broke in 2043.  How much more so - and sooner - now?

But this situation is magnitudes worse than back then. This determines whether this country remains a nation that can be an example for the world.

I give it a 20/80 chance, 80 being "No."

See?  I feel a bit better knowing I'm not alone in my pessimism. Smiley

What I find truly disheartening is the implicit lack of faith I have in my fellow Americans to sort this all out.

And what's worse, my liberals friends who don't much care about the interest on the national debt (or the impications to our freedom) seem to have *enormous* faith in their fellow Americans to deal with it 'down the road'.

I have faith envy.

I knew all about obastard before most folks here, so my pessimism can teach your pessimism many things. Before anyone had heard of him except for a few on the south side of Chicago, I predicted that if he succeeded in his goal of becoming president, the country would possibly fail. His actions continue to verify my opinion.

It seems the Marxist/Commie agenda is working well.

Yes of course with our politicans but most importantly with the citizens of the USA.

40-50 years of anti-USA,counter culture, huge divorce rates, less children by each family, apathetic feelings, entertainment more important then whats really important(I could go on) equals a citizenry of fools.

We allowed this to happen to ourselves and it seems the Cold War may truly be won by the Marxists/Commies by the look of things these days.

Our people is what makes this nation great and I know there are still 60-100 million people who LOVE this country but the remaining 250 million dont really care as long as they get their reality shows, fat rides, fast food and get to look cool...what do they care about this countrys past or future.

Please forgive us the fine honorable men/women in heaven who died for this great country and gave it to us and we let it go in a blink of an eye.....forgive us for letting you down  Cry

But didn't David Stockman just say that it was all the Republican's fault with their love for lower taxes? Cry

Somehow I don't think we are in the straits that we are in because of a lack of money coming into the Federal Gubbermint.

An immediate end to the Departments of Education and Labor  would help me to believe that the politicians are sincere about trying to save this country.

The elimination of many departments would be a long list.
