Ralph Branca, Who Gave Up ‘Shot Heard Round the World,’ Dies at 90
By RICHARD GOLDSTEIN  NY Times

Ralph Branca, the Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher who had three consecutive All-Star seasons for the team but who was never allowed to forget one pitch that crushed them — the ninth-inning fastball that Bobby Thomson drove into the left-field stands at the Polo Grounds in 1951 and on into baseball legend — died Tuesday at his home in Rye, N.Y. He was 90.

Former Red Sox All-Star David "Boo" Ferriss dies at 94
AP

David "Boo" Ferriss, a Boston Red Sox pitcher who helped lead the team to the 1946 World Series, has died. He was 94.

Rick Cleveland, a close friend of the former player, says Ferriss died Thursday at his home in Cleveland, Mississippi, surrounded by family. Cleveland says Ferriss had been in declining health for several weeks.

Ferriss pitched six years for the Red Sox from 1945-50. He had his best season in 1946, when he finished with a 25-6 record and 3.25 ERA and was named an American League All-Star. The Shaw, Mississippi, native's career was shortened by a shoulder injury in 1947, but he finished with a 65-30 career record.

MLB owners, players reach tentative five-year labor deal
AP

Baseball players and owners reached a tentative agreement on a five-year labor contract Wednesday night, a deal that will extend the sport's industrial peace to 26 years since the ruinous fights in the first two decades of free agency.

After days of near round-the-clock talks, negotiators reached a verbal agreement about 3 1/2 hours before the expiration of the current pact. Then they worked to draft a memorandum of understanding, which must be ratified by both sides.

I think they knew they could not afford another strike.  They
would have probably lost a lot of their fans, including myself.
What more luxury could these players want?  Salaries over
20 million a year not enough?  Gee, life must be tough for them.

MLB bans smokeless tobacco for new players

http://video.foxnews.com/v/5232340078001/?#sp=show-clips

Only for 'new' players?  That's ridiculous.  So anyone not considered new can still chew?  How long before someone is not
considered 'new' anymore.  Does that mean they can then chew?
