North Korea says it successfully conducts solid-fuel rocket engine test
AP

SEOUL, South Korea –  North Korea said Thursday that it had successfully conducted a solid-fuel rocket engine test, which if confirmed would be a major step forward in boosting its missile attack capability against South Korea and the United States.

North Korea is known to use liquid propellants for its main ballistic missiles that target South Korea, U.S. bases in the Asia-Pacific region and the American mainland.

N Korea says it successfully tests long-range rocket engine
AP

SEOUL, South Korea –  North Korea said Saturday it has successfully tested a new intercontinental ballistic rocket engine that will give it the ability to stage nuclear strikes on the United States.

The engine's ground test, if true, would be a big step forward for the North's nuclear weapons program, which saw its fourth atomic test earlier this year. But the North may still need a good deal of work before it can hit the U.S. mainland with nuclear missiles. South Korean officials say North Korea doesn't yet have a reliable intercontinental ballistic missile, let alone the ability to arm it with a nuclear warhead.

North Korea appears to fire submarine-launched missile, Seoul says
AP

North Korea on Saturday fired what appeared to be a ballistic missile from a submarine off its northeast coast, South Korean defense officials said, Pyongyang's latest effort to expand its military might in the face of pressure by its neighbors and Washington.

The South Korean officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of office rules, could not immediately confirm where the projectile landed. The Saturday evening launch of what the officials said was presumably a submarine-launched ballistic missile took place near the North Korean coastal town of Sinpo, where analysts have previously detected efforts by the North to develop submarine-launched ballistic missile systems.

Kim Jong Un reportedly launches missiles at random when US provokes him
FoxNews.com

North Korean ruler Kim Jong Un randomly fires off missiles whenever he gets upset about the United States’ demands, his father’s former sushi chef revealed Wednesday, as the country appeared to be gearing up for its next launch.

Kenji Fujimoto, now living in Japan, told the Japanese newspaper Mainichi Shimbun that Kim Jong Un made the admission during a recent trip to Pyongyang.

"I have no intention of waging war," Kim said, according to Fujimoto. "It's that whenever a diplomat tries to approach the U.S., they come up with unreasonable demands. They aggravate me, so I launch missiles.”

Suspected mid-range North Korean missile crashes upon launch, Seoul says
AP

SEOUL, South Korea –  A suspected powerful midrange North Korean missile crashed seconds after liftoff Thursday, South Korea's Defense Ministry said, in what would be the second such embarrassing failure in recent weeks.

South Korea's report of the North's launch failure is particularly humiliating as it comes ahead of a major ruling party meeting next week in Pyongyang, which leader Kim Jong Un is believed to be looking to as a way to put his stamp more forcefully on a government he inherited after his dictator father's death in late 2011.

North Korea says US has crossed 'red line,' warns of showdown over upcoming war games
AP

North Korea's top diplomat for U.S. affairs told The Associated Press Thursday that Washington "crossed the red line" and effectively declared war by putting leader Kim Jong Un on its list of sanctioned individuals, and said a vicious showdown could erupt if the U.S. and South Korea hold annual war games as planned next month.

Han Song Ryol, director-general of the U.S. affairs department at the North's Foreign Ministry, said in an interview that recent U.S. actions have put the situation on the Korean Peninsula on a war footing.

North Korea fires 2 ballistic missiles, one landing close to Japan
FoxNews.com

In what has become an increasingly common occurrence, North Korea attempted to launch two more ballistic missiles in violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions barring such tests.

One of the two No Dong intermediate range missiles exploded shortly after takeoff Wednesday morning.

The other missile flew over North Korea and into the Sea of Japan according to the U.S. military's Strategic Command which tracks missile launches around the world.

Tensions run high in Asia as South Korea, US begin annual military drills

Tensions run high in Asia as South Korea, US begin annual military drills
FoxNews.com

North Korea threatened Monday to launch a nuclear first-strike and turn Seoul and Washington, D.C., into "a heap of ashes" — a threat that comes on the heels of China using its military to signal that it, too, would go to war to enforce its territorial claims.

While Pyongyang’s threat isn't new, it comes as South Korea and the U.S. begin joint military exercises amid the defection of a senior North Korean diplomat and a U.S. plan to place a defense missile system in South Korea.

Tension in the region already was heightened after China last week flashed its newest offensive weapons during war games in the Sea of Japan, exercises that put on display Beijing's latest-generation frigate and long-range bombers as a warning to its neighbors —and the U.S. — that if is not ready to negotiate its territorial claims.
