Stephen Hawking says Earth may be doomed in 1,000 years
By Michael Harthorne   Newser

Stephen Hawking has a simple message for humanity: Haul your butt to Mars (and beyond). In a speech delivered this week at the Oxford Union, the legendary scientist says humanity can only survive another thousand years or so on Earth thanks to growing threats that include climate change, nuclear war, and artificial intelligence, CNN reports.

“I think the human race has no future if it doesn't go to space," the Daily Express quotes Hawking as saying. According to the Christian Science Monitor, Hawking says it's a "near certainty" that disaster will strike the human race within a thousand years if it stays on Earth, which he calls "fragile."

Stephen Hawking says humans must flee Earth within century
Newser

Stephen Hawking is giving humanity a tall order: Colonize Mars in the next century or watch as life on Earth fizzles out. After last year claiming that humans have 1,000 years left on Earth, Hawking says in a new documentary that we instead have about 100 years until we'll need to jump ship as Earth is overwhelmed by overpopulation, climate change, disease, and artificial intelligence.

Well, he was only off 900 years from his earlier prediction.  Roll Eyes

He sounds like a Jehovah Witness.  They predicted the end of the earth: 1914 (I think they've either dropped that, being that it didn't happen, or revised it).

Stephen Hawking wants humanity to leave Earth as soon as possible
By Mike Wehner   Fox News Tech

Renowned astrophysicist Stephen Hawking has been extremely vocal in recent months about his feelings that humanity needs to get off of Earth as soon as possible. With a troubled climate, ever growing population, and mounting risks of apocalypse at our own hands, Hawking has taken the stance that we'll need a new place to live as soon as 100 years from now. Now, the 75-year-old scientist is pushing for a return trip to our closest cosmic neighbor: the moon.

First he said in 1,000 years; then he changed his prediction to 100 years; now he says as soon as possible.  Doesn't that mean he was wrong then his previous two statements?  Wink

If we look back a thousand years from today: war, disease, plague, petulance, and the 300 year long ice age was just lifting.
      Humans adapt.

Stephen Hawking: Earth could turn into hothouse planet like Venus
By Tia Ghose   Live Science

Earth could turn into a hothouse planet like Venus, with boiling oceans and acid rain, if humans don't curb irreversible climate change, physicist Stephen Hawking claimed in a recent interview.

"We are close to the tipping point, where global warming becomes irreversible. Trump's action could push the Earth over the brink, to become like Venus, with a temperature of 250 degrees [Celsius], and raining sulfuric acid," he told BBC News, referring to the president's decision to pull the U.S. out of the Paris climate deal.
