The main reasons that the Dems, particularly Obama and Hillary, opposed the Keystone pipeline was that Warren Buffett owns the railroads that transports all those oil tank cars AND is a heavy contributor to the Dem Party.

With Trump, that is not a consideration. He wants what is best for America AND the environment.

My point is everyone who lived downstream of a pipeline or a farm even where pesticides are used complained we wouldn't have gas, oil or even electricity in our lives. It's really stinks when there's an accident but unless we all want to live in the 18th century we have to deal with it.

It is what it is, I just understand the indians point of view and would like to be sure that every opportunity was explored to find a compromise. I don't think that's unreasonable.

Perhaps I am being politically incorrect, but I don't think all the accomodations given to Indians make a lot of sense.  They would be better off if they lived in 2017 and joined society.

Please correct me if I am off base here.

Being the pipeline right-of-way isn't on reservation property, I don't think they need to be accommodated.  Wait!  Maybe that is the problem?  They want some royalties?

I don't know how often either line was rerouted, but, I can tell you the nonsense has prevented the startup of part of the Dakota Access line.  This line was supposed to be up and running before December of last year.  If you look at the map that was posted, This line is critical to the crude oil supply for refineries in the middle north part of our country.  There are 9 refineries connected to the Patoka Tank Farm.

There is an indian reservation a short drive from me.  We went there a few years ago.  I expected to see some really nice things there.  It was a total dump.  We took a tour and one of the things we saw was a dry creek bed that the tour guide tells us "the women used to wash clothes here" That is hardly a hightlight. == The gift shop had items made in China.  I guess having a heritage is important but like you say, they need to start living in today's world rather than trying to hang on to a past that is no more.

Never saw a rez that wasn't a dump and I have seen a few and lived close to some.
More than once I passed on shopping in their store because there were drunks or folks discouraging "others" from shopping there..

Legalized gambling has put a couple on the map here in Louisiana.  I haven't traveled all over the reservations, except for the one in Baldwin, La. and it isn't nasty looking at all.  Of course the casino and hotel are nice, new and modern.  How this is going to workout for their people remains to be seen.  Right now, all tribal members get a monthly check from the casino profits.  This is not for working there.  I was told the checks range between 1500 and 2000 a month.  I've never spoken to a tribal member about it.
