"They WERE human colonists and did not have the same rights as men--period. That's how it was in the 1770's, trying to paint it differently in 2017 is pure goobly-goop..."

Sorry,  SurroundedByLiberals, but you're looking in the wrong place for "liberals".  Women's rights have always been as inherent as men's.  It's just that men refused--at first--to accept that fact.  The sentence in our constitution that states it, turns out to be correct without any change needed!
Our constitution sez, "All men are created equal..."  That doesn't mean ONLY men are equal.  It simply took time for them to figure out that women had the same rights as men.
Quote:

Until this day, our rights have never changed, just as they, for political reasons, left blacks out of "equal" to appease the few of the founders who OWNED slaves--like Jefferson.  The reslut was they ignored the rights of women for ages.  Shame on them.  Grin

Re Oldcoot:"Women's rights have always been as inherent as men's."

Okay, I concede that in the US Constitution that all men meant everyone.
But outside of that document there is no way I will concede that men considered women to be their equal in most of the world at that time.
Am I about to get smacked by that skillet?

Would any here be willing to toy with the idea of tweaking the first ammendment a bit to limit freedom of press as well as limit freedom of religion to Christianity/Judaism based religions?

Much as it pains me, no, I don't think we can restrict the free press.
Don't know if you remember the SC case of Hustler magazine and Larry Flynt vs Jerry Falwell.  Quote:
In an 8–0 decision, the Court ruled in favor of Hustler magazine, holding that a parody ad published in the magazine depicting televangelist and political commentator Jerry Falwell as an incestuous drunk,  was protected speech since Falwell was a public figure and the parody could not have been reasonably considered believable.

So they can lie, as long as it's not believable!!!  Grin

Once the politicians can control the media, the people never hear the truth!  We SURE don't need that.
We're fortunate that Trump won the election despite the lies and we can turn to Fox news and the internet for the truth.
Just don't read too much liberal crap, and you'll be OK!

I couldn't agree more.  You have to give women credit, though, for following their men west to new lands and dangerous situations, not to mention the hard work they endured.
I have to give women a lot of credit for making the opening of the west a little easier for the explorers!
(See how I handled that, with a little sugar, SBL??)  Grin Grin_

As I have mentioned, I am spending the golden years, among other things, reading and studying The Bible.
Isaiah tells the story of a people who were given a beautiful, fertile land. They turned into "a people laden with sin, full of iniquity." The nation became desolate. The cities burned.

When asked at the constitutional convention what government the country was given by concerned citizens, Benjamin Franklin replied, "A republic, if you can keep it."

Men who would lose everything they owned, faced torture, probably a slow death, and their families would be turned out to wander the streets.
Men who stole 13, almost 14, colonies from the most powerful country on earth.  Men who fought and defeated that same country and then later negotiated trade agreements.  Men who actually believed in God, country, and family before all themselves.
Compare those qualities to who occupies the seats in Congress today.

The brilliance in the Founders design of our Democratic Republic is essentially rested on one simple Judeo/Christian principle -  man is a flawed individual. Hence the need for checks/balances.
To the state of our Democratic Republic today, we can blame no one but ourselves. It took decades of complacency and ignorance to get to where we are now. As a result, we have forfeited many of the liberties given us by our Founding Fathers form of government.
I'm sure we all remember the oft quoted line by B. Franklin..." a republic, if you can keep it."

Franklin's prophetic words imply a certain optimism, the confidence to predict that the power of liberty enjoined with the abundance of this new land and the people it had attracted was going to result in wealth and riches only Kings could dream about, made possible by hard work, ingenuity, and common sense.
Now, there is one aspect I am so surprised is seldom mentioned, though it is key to our troubles. That is covetousness. If we really look at the covetousness warned against be the ancients, we find nothing more complicated that one man wanting what another possesses. But there is more: that  man doesn't plan to work hard to gain that possession. He's going to take it.
When enough clever men band together to those aims, we could call it the communist party. When they are clever enough to enlist dupes in their cause, they find feminism, equal rights, socialism, the color revolution, student unrest, identity conflicts, the neuroses of the day. Our mistake is thinking these are harmless ideas, little more than political positions. That could turn out, for many of us, to be a very expensive underestimate.

You got that right, RD!

--and we are struggling with that very thing today.
We've overlooked for too long the outside forces that have invaded us and used our very freedoms against us.
The commies have done the very thing they promised to do---take over the free press, (just as Hitler did) and take over one political (democrat) party!
Now we have to use the same freedoms to overturn the commie press and the party.  We need very smart people to do that.
Trump is the beginning!
