Ibuprofen linked to heart problems......

....according to the study, people taking ibuprofen have a 31% increased risk of having hearth attack.  No mention of aspirin, which is also a NSAID?

The article sites 1,200 or more a day.  I take two at bedtime and rarely use more except on limited occasions, so I think I'm ok.  I do take an 80mg, low dose, aspirin per day as most older people do.  Wink

I actually get frustrated with these studies. I guarantee you can find a study that says ibuprofen is protective.

Here is what I think. I heard a theory at one point of heart disease that IMHO made much more sense to me. The heart is both an organ and a muscle.  Clogged arteries are not the cause of heart attacks.  They are a side effect of a muscle that isn't getting what it needs to be strong. Thus it slowly dies/ shrinks and the arteries are clogged by dead cells clogging up the arteries near the heart (how come the arteries of the liver don't get clogged)

What keeps your heart strong? Cardiogenics. The most common one is Magnesium. (something we don't get in foods any longer).   But you do get this at the hospital when you suffer a heart attack. Also CQ10. Did you know that your body can MAKE cardiogenics? What exactly do you think that body uses to make these, wait for it, cholesterol.

This theory states that stress on a weak heart is the cause of heart attacks. And just recently you can see that in the deaths of (1) Carrie Fisher -- cocaine weakens the heart; (2) Alan Thicke, was playing basketball at the time.  And recently several deaths this week due to shoveling heavy snow.

If you really don't want to die of a heart attack be sure not to put undue stress on your body and keep you heart as strong as possible with proper nutrients.

If your interested it is the Myogenic Theory of Myocardial Infarction.

I understand.  It always seems that way, doesn't it?

One study will say coffee is good for you for one reason, and not good for you, for another reason.  Same thing with drinking
alcohol.   I got a kick out of the 'one drink a day is good' study.

I could never comprehend why anyone would want just one drink to begin with.   Made me think that someone who never drank,
may start with that one they recommend, end up liking it, and
start taking advances up to next weeks' drinks days ahead of time.   Cheesy

And you know that those who already drink several a day, sure
aren't going to cut back to one a day!!   Huh

My doctor has me on a low dose 80mg aspirin regimen.  Said
it's a good preventative of heart attacks.

Several years ago my cardiologist suggested that I start taking "baby aspirin" and I've been taking one per day since then. The only problem with taking baby aspirin is that I bruise more easily.

The theory that NSAID's are harmful to the heart is NOT new.  So, don't take this as breaking news.

Low dose aspirin works as a mild anticoagulant.

I much prefer aspirin.  I can take 3 and clear up the most severe headaches, although for normal headaches, 2 does just as well.
The side effects of aspirin are considerably lower than for ibuprofen.

Ibuprofen tablets are sold under the trade names Advil and Motrin. If you want the crap scared out of you, read this about this drug—(detailed):
https://www.drugs.com/sfx/ibuprofen-side-effects.html
Compare Aspirin (detailed) side effects:
https://www.drugs.com/sfx/aspirin-side-effects.html

Too much of ANY drug is not a good idea--although I've followed the "one drink" per day rule, pretty closely.  (OK, so I cheat and have 1 1/2 glass of wine, once in a while!)  Grin

Lo dose aspirin over the long term can actually be harmful (GI bleed.  The dosage quoted in the study (1200mg) is way above a normal dose and would probably result in GI symptoms long before the heart problem.  Aleve (naproxen) is a better alternative than ibuprofen (Advil) in my experience (40 years)

Amen to that, I look like a battered woman sometimes.  I'm always running through the house like a wild woman, so bumping my hands on the door jams leaves me with big bruises.   Grin

These studies will change by next week.
