Ayn Rand is Trump's favorite writer

I was strongly influenced by Ayn Rand as a teenager, in about 1968.  Later in life I started to disagree with many of her ideas, but I still find her a fascinating person.

I just read that president Trump says she  is his favorite writer.  I'm curious what others here  think about her.

Here  is the thing about Trump and Rand.

Quote:
Few, if any, literary philosophers have had as much influence on American business and politics as Ayn Rand, especially now that Donald J. Trump occupies the White House.

President Trump named Rand his favorite writer and “The Fountainhead” his favorite novel. Secretary of State Rex W. Tillerson has cited “Atlas Shrugged” as a favorite work, and the C.I.A. director, Mike Pompeo, said the book “really had an impact on me.”

As Ray Dalio, the founder of Bridgewater Associates, the world’s largest hedge fund, put it in a recent essay, “her books pretty well capture the mind-set” of the Trump administration. “This new administration hates weak, unproductive, socialist people and policies,” he wrote, “and it admires strong, can-do profit makers.”

In business, Rand’s influence has been especially pronounced in Silicon Valley, where her overarching philosophy that “man exists for his own sake, that the pursuit of his own happiness is his highest moral purpose, that he must not sacrifice himself to others, nor sacrifice others to himself,” as she described it in a 1964 Playboy interview, has an obvious appeal for self-made entrepreneurs. Last year Vanity Fair anointed her the most influential figure in the technology industry, surpassing Steve Jobs.

I loved Atlas Shrugged. Couldn't get through The Fountainhead. Don't know why.

Rand is an interesting person but was very self centered and a little too atheistic for my taste.

Back in the mid 80s several associates of mine were really into Rand. They practically gushed about "The Fountainhead", supposedly the monologue of the main character being so incredibly deep. So, at their urging, I read it. Didn't see anything special about it, other than to convince me even more her entire philosophy was a collection of excuses to act like a selfish a$$.

She definitely was both of those.

Atlas Shrugged was so boring that I gave up before I read 100 pages. After that boring experience. I decided not to even try The Fountainhead.

Which makes that man a self-centered, egotistical jerk!  Lousy friends and, as a soldier, can't be counted on.
Sorry, I read the books and heard all the raves about Ms Rand.
She's a good writer.  She just needs a set of morals for guidance.
As a good little Russki, she was influenced by Nietzsche and Dostoyevsky.  Oh yeah, and Aristotle, too.  --And about 2 dozen others as well.
(What a mix!)

Personally, I don't like her philosophy.  She wrote these books at a time when many people found it interesting to "get in touch" with themselves.
Blah!
Any philosophy that fails to take into account the people around you is bound to be useless, "what may a friend be worth if he give his life, for yours?"  (One of my annoying bon mots!)  Grin

I guess you can tell I haven't much use for selfish "philosophers".

It's definitely a slow starter, but after page 200 the rest of the 800 pages just fly.  Grin

I gather that she didn't write any Westerns. I never heard of her 'til about 3 years ago...and I do have a diploma in English Lit.

I agree with most of the negative posts here, although when I was 18 I was totally into her,  read all her books and loved them.

So how do you feel about Trump saying she was his favorite writer?
