Christmas Tradition in the Texas Space Community

Print Post
During the Christmas Season of 1968 Apollo 8 was returning from the first mission to orbit the Moon. People in the Space Community surrounding the Johnson Space Center in Houston decided to greet the return of the Apollo 8 Astronauts by everyone putting out Luminarios along the sidewalks and streets surrounding NASA JSC.

A Lunimaio is a small bag with a scoop of sand in the bottom to hold it down. A votive candle is placed in the middle of the sand and lit about 7:00PM on Christmas Eve. Almost every home in the Space Community lined those Luminarios along the sidewalks and streets surrounding the Space Center.

The following is a photo of our Luminarios on Christmas Eve of 2010:

Our yard is on the left, the street is on the right.

We have followed that tradition ever since our return to the Soace Community in 1974. We put our Luminarios out last night, but I didn't take any photos.

We have roses and azaleas blooming in our front yard for Christmas. I'll post a photos later.

NT -- My girl friend is from Alvin (just outside Houston) and the whole town puts out Luminarios.  What I have always wondered is why doesn't the bag catch on fire?

Our family arrived to open presents so I didn't take the promised photos until this morning:

The candles are less than 1.5 in. in diameter and less than .5 in. high. The only time one of our bags caught on fire was on a windy night when the wind blew the upper part of the bag onto the flame.

Rub it in you folks in warm climates with flowers still blooming. Here in Wyoming we have about 12" of snow and a high today of 9 above and icy roads. No fierce wind at the moment.
On the other hand, we do not have fire ants, flying bugs the size of a small planes, and snakes big enough to swallow a hog.
Not only that, almost everyone still speaks English ! Grin

Not all of the South is warm.  I am having to wear my heavy coat in Houston.  It got down below 60 last night.   Smiley
