I doubt that a bunch.  More freedom does not equal liberty.  Making drugs legal, celebrating swish lifestyle, many so-called libertarians’ ideals blind well with the far leftist idiocies.  I think public libertarians left the William F. Buckley’s version light years behind.

Real conservatives do not embrace the free love, pot smoking lifestyle modern libertarians support and are certainly not to the right of us.

No, that must have been the |Grinch|  Smiley  Err, |glitch|

My take is that a libertarian is a neo-conservative that forgot to leave liberal thoughts behind, like Ron Paul.  Some of his ideas sound okay, but he is a kook never the less.  His son fairs better but still tends to be out in left field.  I like both of them, but not politically.

For the purposes of this particular topic, I will forgo my usual complaint that the terms "conservative" and "liberal" have been corrupted by the progressive movement to hide their agenda.

As I see it, libertarians are fiscally conservative, but progressive (liberal) on social issues. The old "If it does not harm anyone, it's not the government's business." argument.

Modern American conservatives are conservative on both fiscal and social issues, believing that there is a standard moral code which comes from outside the human race that is/should be the basis for our laws.

Right, I would agree that Ron Paul is Libertarian and can be called Conservative in some areas, but has other ideas also.  I would never confuse Ron Paul's ideas with Hillary Clinton.

I'm a conservative bordering on libertarian (Note the small "l"). I strongly oppose drug legalization, including Pot. That is where I draw the line between conservatism and Libertarians (Note the capital "L")

While I am generally opposed to some of their ideas they offer interesting proposals on some things that need thought.  Some of their social issues just don't add up with their "small government" stands when the social ideas require large government to inforce them.

Well, my cats insists on sitting on my lap and PC, so will give up  for today!

I've been looking into Conservatism and was wondering if you could tell me the main differences between Conservatism and Libertarianism because it seems to me as if they have a lot in common. Thanks in advance for any replies.

You should start by reading the Libertarian Party official platform.  Libertarians are closet anarchists.  They believe that the individual is sovereign, and should be allowed to do whatever they please without government, laws, or any kind of authority getting in their way.  Which, of course, is the very definition of anarchy.

https://www.lp.org/PLATFORM/

You just think they are similar, but they really are not.  Conservatives want a limited government, while libertarians do not want ANY government.  Conservatives believe in the rule of law, libertarians do not.

The greatest divergence between conservatives and libertarians always came in the social realm. And it is for this reason I cannot call myself a “libertarian” in good conscience.
Conservatism in our society adheres to a discipline that supports a high moral standard reflecting the Judeo Christian ethic. This is accomplished through laws and enforced by local/state government(s) voted in by “the people.”  Moreover, these “laws” do not run counter to, or contradict, the supreme law of the land - U.S. Constitution.
All that said, social conservatives of today are viewed as pariahs by all major political parties in America today. They are like a flickering flame that is in the process of being extinquished.

So, while Republicans, Democrats and Libertarians can differ like night and day, each one of them would eventually evolve into a form of “controlling government” if they’re absent faith-based institutions that teach and inspire high moral values

We may not embrace them but we sure shouldn't stop someone else from it.  As a true conservative I live for the premis of Life! Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.  Too many so called conservatives ignore this.  I'm not concerned if someone is gay, or if they want three wives.  To each their own.  That is their LL&H.  A conservative must understand that first and foremost ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL.  When we start segregating we start ignoring this self evident truth.  Rand, Buckley, and Reagan had it right.

Libertarians dont want to live by someone elses standards or oppose theirs on others.
Conservatives believe people should live by their moral standards.
Democrats believe people should live by their moral standards or lack thereof....
