Now trying getting it passed.

President Trump's new budget would severely restrict the kinds of foods that food stamp recipients could buy with the government assistance.

Recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program — SNAP — receive a monthly supplement that offers help purchasing food.

But Trump's proposal would require people who receive at least $90 a month from the program to get about half of their benefits in the form of a “USDA food package,” rather than by purchasing the food themselves, NPR reported.

The proposed change would affect more than 80 percent of people enrolled in SNAP.

The White House’s proposal would reduce government spending on SNAP by $129 billion over the next 10 years. Combined with other proposed changes to the program, the changes would shrink SNAP’s budget by $213 billion over the same amount of time, a 30 percent reduction.

I have often wondered what happened to this program.  When I was a kid we were so poor that sometimes we were on the "commodities".   At scheduled days trucks would deliver loads of food grown and processed by American farmers and bought by the American government to the warehouse and the "commodity" food was passed out to registered needy families.  No money passed hands, no welfare cards, very little abuse of the system.   The needy American people got food and the American farmer got paid for it.  Seemed like a pretty good idea at the time...

I had to use this program briefly about 20 years ago, and I recall that you had to bre working to qualify and the amount I got was pretty small. I think this program was greatly expanded under Obama.

With 24/7 grocery stores today it shouldn't be allowed in mini marts.  I was once behind a person using a stamp card for Mountain Dew and Slim Jims.

But back in the 80s here in PA you could use stamps for tobacco until the taxpayers found out.

I think much of it is run by the states. Here in NC you get a min. until you get a job then it goes up, also no cash unless you have a job or schooling. In NJ I have a friend who works retail and he tells me there is a way to get Cash for Cigs or anything else off the EBT cards?

These SNAP programs have got to riddled with fraud.  I was at the food store in line to checkout and a woman in a City Bus Uniform paid for her food with a Lone Star Card which is the Texas Food Stamp EBT Card and got at least a $100 back. There are so many things wrong with that.

Some people live very well off of government programs.
I never heard of the food stamp police.

I spend too much time in local casinos as my "down" time. I had to get up and leave once when a woman sitting beside me, drinking beer and smoking, answered her cell phone and told someone on the other end (probably a kid) that there were plenty of food stamps and to go to the store and get whatever they wanted.   My daughter, during her druggie days, got nearly $400 in food stamps a month.  She would take her druggie friends to the store and buy their groceries in return for pills, pot and booze.  I put my foot down (she was living here with her kids) and forced her to go to the store with me and buy groceries for her children. She left shortly after that. She is clean and sober now, but she had quite the EBT racket going on for months. I could tell by the slobs knocking on the door.

Here's something else to think about. This appeared to be more common on the East coast but may be on both now. Certain stores sold 55 gal drums with lock tight lids that could be used for shipping. Welfare families here would load it up from food and ship it to their family members  in Mexico or someplace in S. America.  The American taxpayer has been screwed by both legal and illegal immigrants for years.  It never seems to end since we have been sold out by both political parties on the immigration issue.
