It really depends on what you are using it for.  The .22LR works just fine for taking out small game at distances of 300 yards.  If you are looking to take out ground squirrels, gophers, or prairie dogs you can do it with a .22LR.  If it is a calm day, you should have no problem hitting your target at 300 yards with a variable 3x9 scope.

Something with a little more punch might be better suited for that range, like the 5.56mm, but it is not outside the ability of the .22LR.  At the velocity the 5.56mm round travels, wind would not be as important of a factor as it is with the .22LR which travels at a much slower rate.

I keep an AR-7 attached to my backpack when I go on a multi-day hike.  You never know when an opportunity might arise for some fresh game.  Although, I admit that I do not use it to shoot anything beyond ~100 yards.  It is not because of the round (and I do use .22LR), but more a reflection of the accuracy of the firearm.  I'm lucky to get 6" groupings at 100 yards at the range.  By comparison, I get 1.5" groupings at 100 yards using my Springfield .3006 just using iron sights.
