Drowning isn't humane. It's sadistic. So are traps. This teacher has serious issues.

As opposed to rabies, getting hit by a car, ripped up by people's dogs, disease, starvation and predation like being eaten by a snake or by a gator....?

Raccoons die horrible deaths everyday.

Where did you read that? It was not in the article.
As far as drowning , this is from the article:
"According to the conservation commission’s website, wildlife animals that are considered a nuisance can be caught using live traps, snares or firearms during daylight hours and where they’re allowed. Animals “must be released legally or euthanized humanely within 24 hours of capture or trap inspection,” according to the agency."

That's the inference I got from the article's first two paragraphs.

Re: A Florida teacher was placed on administrative leave after school officials were told that he had students help him drown wild raccoons during class.

A 14-second video published by CBS affiliate WKMG showed a group of students filling a tub of water using a hose and later keeping a trapped raccoon submerged. A mother told the TV station that her son, who shot the video, came home upset about what happened to the raccoons, including the one seen in the video, inside a metal wire trap.

If the teacher had the students help him, and the raccoon was in a wire trap, I assumed the teacher (the person in charge) brought the raccoon to the class.

If the students brought the raccoon to the class, it makes no difference to me as, for the teacher to kill a raccoons in that manner, in front of the students, enlisting their help to do it, is inhuman, IMO. That's the main point of my opinion.

Ok, so it was inference.

I did some investigation. The animals were live trapped on school grounds.

"Students and staff members raise chickens and other livestock, which are housed in a shed behind the school."

https://www.google.com/amp/amp.wftv.com/www.wftv.com/news/local/forest-high-scho...

Which is legal but FWC is specific on what must be done with trapped nuisance wildlife:

"RACCOONS, SKUNKS, AND OPOSSUMS
PREVENTION AND CONTROL
Live trapping can work as a method for dealing with garden damage. Florida law requires that “nuisance” animals that are trapped be humanely killed or released on the same contiguous property  where they were caught. This prevents ecological disturbances and disease spread.

A NOTE ON TRAPPING & RELOCATION
Trapping should be a matter of last resort. Once an animal is caught, then you have to decide what to do with it. As mentioned above, under Florida law, any “nuisance” animal caught in a trap must either be humanely killed or released on the same contiguous property where it was caught. Animals can only be transported if they are taken in for a euthanasia procedure."

http://sfyl.ifas.ufl.edu/natural-resources/nuisance-wildlife/

Florida's reason why you can not transport to another area:

http://myfwc.com/wildlifehabitats/profiles/relocating-wildlife/

So when you trap a nuisance animal, you either release it back into the same contiguous acres it came from. Or you kill it on site.
The FWC website does not state what constitutes  humanely euthanize. But state the teacher may not have done anything illegal.

"FWC said it's legal to kill nuisance animals, but there are specific rules about humanely killing them.

"While law enforcement tells us the teacher may not have done anything illegal, his actions before students are certainly questionable""

https://www.google.com/amp/amp.wftv.com/www.wftv.com/news/local/forest-high-scho...

Given today's world, the teacher may be guilty of poor judgement. But IMO he should not be "charged with a felony" nor does he have "serious issues".

If the farmer made children watch, it would be the same response.

^Very much this^ It's not about the animals being killed. The methods with children watching are the problem...

....then why not bring them to a slaughter house, and let them see where their 'happy meals' come from. Undecided

A lot of the kids I grew up with had seen death on the farm, or by hunting before HS. I think as we loose farms and hunting dies people have been insulated .

We started as a nation where children were involved in the war to a nation where 14-15 year olds in an AG class can't watch a nuisance animal destroyed .

.....you're not getting it.  It's not the killing of a nuisance animal that's the issue here, it's the cruel way it was done.
