Semantic Fallacy

I.  Three Men walk into a hotel. The hotel check-in desk charged 15 dollars, each man paid 5 dollars. when the men left, the Check-in desk realized it was only 10 dollars instead of 15. so the check in lady told a bell boy to bring the five dollars back to the three men. the bell boy didn't know how to split the 5 dollars 3  ways so he kept 2 dollars and gave the men each one dollar. now the men only paid 4 dollars each. $4 x 3men = $12 +2 -what the bell boy kept = 14. Where did the other dollar go?

II.  Three men rent a hotel room. Each pays $10 for a total of $30 spent on the room. The next day the hotel owner tells the three men that they over paid for the room as it only costs $25. The three men tell the owner to give them each a dollar back and he can keep two dollars. If you do the math, each man paid $9 a piece for the room for a total of $27. The owner kept $2 which brings the total to $29. The question is where did the other dollar go?

III. 3 Men Go Into A Motel. The Man Behind The Desk Said The Room Is $30, So Each Man Paid $10 And Went To The Room. A While Later The Man Behind The Desk Realized The Room Was Only $25, So He Sent The Bellboy To The 3 Guys' Room With $5.  On The Way, The Bellboy Couldn't Figure Out How To Split $5 Evenly Between 3 Men, So He Gave Each Man A $1 And Kept The Other $2 For Himself.  This Meant That The 3 Men Each Paid $9 For The Room, Which Is A Total Of $27, Add The $2 That The Bellboy Kept = $29.  Where Is The Other Dollar?

LOL - Liberal math.  Or is this an example of common core?

Whether $15 reduced to $10, or $30 reduced to $25, all three cases the problem forgets that the amount paid was reduced by $5.

Take the $30 reduced to $25 cases, they explain the $15 reduced to $10:

Each man ended up out $9 for the room: $25 for the room, and $2 the bellboy stole.  It's that simple.  For grand total of the $30, $25 for the room, $3 for the 3 men, and $2 in the pocket of the bellboy that gets fired the next day.

If a snail climbs a pole that is 12 feet high. Each day it climbs three feet but slides down two feet as it sleeps at night. How many days will it take for the snail to get to the top of the pole?

11, because when he gets 11 feet up, he starts to climb his 3 feet on the morning of the 12th day and falls off the pole at the top after climbing only one foot. Wink
He can't slide back his usual 3 feet, because he's too busy falling 12.

I have heard that all of my life.  It still baffles me.  My profession is using figures.  Indeed $9 X 3 = $27 and the bellboy kept $2.  It is a mind twister. I have never heard an answer that truly solves that one.  The only one I have heard is the room is $25, the $3 to the men and the bellboy kept $2.  That does not solve the original problem though.

You just explained it to yourself. Don't let the wording of the problem confuse you.

The wording of the problem implies that the room cost $27 for $9 each, and the bell boy has $2 additional dollars for a total of $29, which implies a missing dollar.

But that is not so.  The room is $25.  The bell boy kept $2, which makes a subtotal of $27, which came out to $9 each.  Add in the $3 given back by the bellboy ($1 each) and it's a total of $30.

Numbers are easy. It's words that can screw you up.

As it implies, it is semantics. While lecturing one must keep in mind not to make this mistake or one will get weird questions not easily answered.
