America is just horrible. Just horrible. Move to Europe.

It's by the typical "I quite my day job and I now I travel full-time" type.

Top comment for that video: " I grew up and was born and raised in NYC, but moved to Europe the moment I was old enough to do so. Without a doubt, and i kid you not...one of the BEST feelings in the entire world is getting on a plane to go BACK to Europe. Visiting America feels like some sort of twisted dream, its nothing but culture shock everytime i go back. The way people treat each other, the aggression,  the political climate, the excessive amount of poverty and greed, its absolutely out of control. 100% I prefer to be in Europe, no doubt about it. "

A comment within that one said, "Canada is part of North America, and people love traveling here, because Canada is what America used to be 40 years ago, before Reagan and the religious "right" took over. "

What?

More stupidity:

" As a Brit it really pisses me off when that orange idiot lies to the American people about about hospital floors drowning in blood etc. "

"I'm European, Portuguese to be exact and I've never seen a pepper spray can in real life. Wouldn't even know where to buy one, because even at night in small and dark alleyways, I've generally never felt the need to. Something can happen yes, but it's very unlikely. If you don't mind me saying so, it seems like a very sad existence, to live constantly in fear.

This reminds me as well of terrorists attacks. From your media I get the feeling you guys are terrified of terrorists even though you haven't had an attack in years. Europeans on the other hand (French, British and Germans in particular) are much less fearful even though they've had several attacks in the last few years. Everyone is concerned and worried yes, but most of us won't change our lives or limit them in any way, because that's what fear does to you."

Miss, we haven't had an attack in years because of our "sad existence." And from the last I heard Americas live their lives as they did before the attacks. It's just TSA that changed.

"As a European I moved to North America to be with my husband. Let's just say the first 2/3 years have been very traumatizing. The mindset, world view, just in the smallest details how people think here, it's like Americans are an alien race. Very strange thought processes, combined with the dangerous conviction that their opinion is a monopoly on the truth. Very very hard to experience coming from an open minded, free thinking, non judgmental and loving culture. I'ts all about strip malls, cars, money, selfishness, greed, gluttony, careers, possession, distractions, me me me me me. How can you ever connect to a human being on an intellectual level when the human beings you live with have never developed a healthy intellect to begin with. It's bad, it's really bad. I feel sorry for people who have no idea what the rest of the world is like. I encourage to get out in to the world and live a real life. I'm not saying Americans are less, or bad, i'ts just another reality and a brainwashed mindset due to a toxic culture.

Americans often think that their perspective of reality is a universal reality, that they have got it all right, and everyone else is crazy, not just wrong, but crazy. They tend to think in extremes and stick tot what they think is truth They reject any other perceptive. simply because they don't want to observe it from any different platform other than their own. Now this is of course a general rule, not everyone in America is that extreme. but there is a very obvious pattern , and it shows. They glorify their own reality and reject everything that criticizes it with aggression. glorification, aggression etc these are all not great things to collectively practice within a culture, its destructive."

Italics: Oh good grief. Seems like you didn't meet a lot of people in the US, hon.

More lack of perspective, ironically:

"I have been in France for a year and a half - born and raised in America and you are totally correct. Not until you leave and look back at what America is, do you realize what a lie so much of the country is. The US is not a life for living, it's a life for surviving and for drugs of all kinds - literal and symbolic, like materialism. Sure people are materialistic in Europe too, but it's nowhere on the same scale as in America. I feel like I finally found some peace in Europe. Plus, the job market and diversity is way better where I am than back home in Texas. I get recruiters calling me for work and jobs I apply to actually respond. I would apply to 200 jobs back in America and not get one single response."

" You are beginning to see the USA as the rest of the world see it. It is less than complimentary! It is a great shame that a county and people with untold potential should be so controlled by their commercial and political environment. I seriously believe that the average American sincerely believes that they live in the greatest country in the world, with no concept of the truth. It is a great shame that more of them fail to see the world around them as you have. "

" It’s continuous propaganda. You may not even notice it but it’s there. If you watch closely, the TV series that always assert that anything American is best or more advanced. The people writing it may not even know they’re doing it. If the population come to the understanding that perhaps the US isn’t the greatest country in the world, you may have a lot of unrest. The perpetuation of the American Dream is continually dangerous. For every one that makes it, how many fall by the wayside? Where is the support system for those? Non existent because that would endanger the American Dream. "

Huh? What news shows and programs have you've been watching bud? Apparently there's a government conspiracy theory that the America Dream cannot survive unless there's no poor people.

Now compare that video to this one by a South African expat:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmgKkZ7YX_Y

It only has 600+ views. The one in my first post? near 700K.

Oh yeah, because life in Europe is just so *beeping* wonderful. Like they have no problem with Muslim violence, increasing crime, drug abuse, poverty, a lack of opportunity for the common citizens? (sarcasm)

Where exactly did this jerk (the author) travel in Europe? The very wealthy high tech areas would be my personal guess. The job offers were most likely due to the particular skill set he has. Had he left Texas for the silicon valley he would have found the same situation. The wealthy areas where employees of Google, Apple, Facebook live and work are really nice too.

I call BS on this guy's European 'experience' and highly suspect this article is nothing but liberal progressive propaganda. Here's an idea, why don't all these US liberal progressives just up and move to Europe? Works for me.

And being European I can vouch that this is BS.

Sure the wealthy areas are okay! Because the muslim immigrants can't afford to live there and they have private security.

As an ex-Londoner I could never afford to live in London again. Its been bought out be 'outside' infulences (who import the Faithful).

Did you click on the link? It's a youtube video and the author is a she. The quotes were the most upvoted comments on the video.

The Texan complaining about work opportunities - not sure what industry he is in. I mean, living in France for a 1.5 years and acting like there's no way to earn a living in the US screams disingenuous. The American job marker is competitive for sure though.

Many of the quotes just seem narrow minded, ironically enough, and the uploader of the video, well, her criticisms are somewhat valid though incredibly selective and rather disingenuous.

For example, her issue with the work culture is rather poor given that, compared to Europeans, Americans do work longer hours though depending on the job and sector work/life balance differs greatly. Compared to the average salary man in Japan, America's work/life balance seems priorities are right. To the average 8-5PMer American with some overtime the European/UK mentality towards a 40 hour week is considered under worked.

Another issue that I thought was rather unfair was her complaint with thrift stores, saying that their existence in the US is mainly due to Americans consumerism culture. If one has ever been to a thrift store in the States many of the fashion found within a thrift store is somewhat outdated. Also, America has 300+ million people. Thrift stores are bound to exist in some fashion (no pun). Sure, Americans probably should be creative and find ways to refurbish furniture that would be relegated to the curb or dropped of at a thrift store, and to wear clothes longer and not to purchase clothes that won't be worn more than a year.

Earlier in the vid she portrayed Americans as a paranoid group about their safety, thinking that neighborhood watch groups were odd and being cautious when meeting a stranger that you met on the internet is unreasonable.

NOTE: The uploader makes money off of youtube and her blog while her husband is a busker.

In the  first place, I suppose I'm biased enough to judge this person by her appearance.  A silver bolt (or some such) in the middle of her tongue; Tattoos on her fingers, a shaven head.  This is not a person who exudes class.  She appears to be a nomadic person who never spends much time in any one country, so I'd assume her assumptions are based on brief visits, rather than the experience of extended stays.

It's difficult to make comparisons between America and Europe.  The whole of Germany, north to south, could probably fit into California, comfortably.  France is more like Texas. Holland and Belgium are nothing more than cities to travel through on the way to another destination.  (Germany is approx. 530 miles in length; 390 miles in width, with 80 million people.)

Progress in Europe, due to it's smaller size, always depends on tearing something down and rebuilding it--making it, hopefully, better.  The countries of Europe really have no space to expand in, which was one of Hitler's early complaints.

Customs vary between the countries so much there isn't really much comparison, one to the other.

I lived in Germany for 2.5 years after WW2 and watched the rebuilding.  It took more years than when I was there for those people to recover from the devastation of that war.  I believe it marked they and their children and their children's children for life.

In two different vacations to Europe, I spent a month each time, traveling from northern Germany to Italy.  I always found the people friendly; the country beautiful and always in the larger cities worries about crime, just as it is here.

Frankly, I couldn't finish watching the video.  I don't really consider this person to be an unbiased reporter.  Most disenfranchised citizens who relocate to another country, very seldom have anything good to say about America.
That does not change my perception of our country, nor does it enforce any belief that our problems are unique to our country.  I also do not believe the problems we have, can't be overcome.
