So who is checking the mental ability of those doing the CHECKING?  Maybe they are not so mentally able.

You know how the givermint is so superb at everything that their drivers can drive your kids in those rickety yellow school busses WITHOUT seat belts?  Well that same givermint is so superb their mental health "checkers" NEVER have mental illness...EVER.

To play the Devil's Advocate here, my daughter is a shrink and she leans Conservative. Here's the real sticking point in all this, most of these highly disturbed individuals have broken the law or engaged in some very serious stuff as juveniles. The neighbors, teachers, local law enforcement know all about these kids, but their juvenile records are sealed. So, the lunatic kid who killed his neighbor's cat, threatened his class mates, made trouble in school, was always giving the cops grief isn't going to be 'red flagged' anyway!

While I'm not in favor in allowing straight up dangerous mental patients to own guns, I'm also not sure this national 'red flag' idea is going to work when applied to reality. No, the power has to go back to the local communities IMO. The local Sheriff's need to be the ones making the determination on who's too dangerous to have a firearm, not some politicians in Washington DC.

That doesn't work either, I've heard of some places that require a local sheriff to O.K. a gun license and they simply refuse all requests.

These red flag laws, if passed, will simple make it easy for people to just red flag anybody they don't like.  "Swatting" is bad enough now, this red flag thing will be a nightmare if it only takes a phone call.

Here in NC to get a CHP ya have to have a letter from your Dr. as well as a mental health check, for that they basically just check to see if ya ever been to a psychiatrist.
I was prescribed a med for depression years back not for depression but for neuropathy. I refuse this day to take it because I know some day someone will say look he's on an anti-depressants.

Never! Look up NJ where they let apps sit on their desks for 6-12 months, then purposefully loose many, spell your name wrong, demand cash for payment then 6 months later swear they never got it. Happened to me in Lakehurst, NJ. Yrs later the woman was fired for taking money, and down the list.

How about us old curmudgeons?  All we do is huff and grown about things.  Are we mental cases?

According to my daughter being a curmudgeon does not make one a mental case...just makes us annoying as 'all get out' but not insane!

Ok, so all ideas have been shot down as to how to help prevent these mentally ill youngsters from murdering droves of innocent people. What now? What should be done? Personally, I'm now at a total loss as to what needs to be done.

Wow! That wasn't my experience at all. I have a CCP in NC, but all I had to do was take the class, and get finger printed. No Doc letter, or med check. I carry all the time, and just renewed last January...  Smiley
