If it goes directly over me like Hurricane Charley did as a CAT 3
in 2004, we had over 20G in damage back then.

I stayed home during that one with one of my sons.  It was a fast acting storm but did a lot of damage.  It sounded like hundreds of people were running across my roof when it hit us.
When Hurricane Frances followed shortly, I stayed home alone.
I'll be honest with you, I was terrified during the event after experiencing Charley.  I went outside in the front that night, and watched my neighbor's tree buckle the sidewalk and then fall across the road.

I am having a repiping done Friday.  Have a leak going on under the floor.  Have no hot water presently.  But we just got a new generator with propane tank all set up in the yard.  We were lucky back in 2004 as we got power back in less than 2 days while some others had to wait weeks.

I never take their 'guessing' to too much concern though.  They can speculate all they want.  To me, my guess is as good as theirs is.  Only difference is, they get paid thousands to offer their speculations.  To me it's always 50/50.   It's either going to hit us, or it's not.  Only time will tell, and more importantly, this too shall pass.  Wink

We were 30 miles from the eye of Charley and so glad it was no closer.  Then the eyes of Francis and Jeanne crossed directly over us with minor damages; our roof was only 24 years old then and we had it replaced in 2009. Irma (2017) only took out three soffit panels and a small part of a shingle.  Yes, each one sounded like people running across the roof.  However, since I had gone though several near “Andrew” like typhoons in the Pacific in the early 1960’s and then the eye wall of Andrew in 1992 the more recent storms were only irritating experiences compared to Andrew, where I was afraid the entire night of August 24, 1992.  Yes, Andrew was a real hurricane.  My battery powered met-station at work recorded 204 MPH winds right before the anemometer and other sensors went flying out in the Glades.  A real mother of mother storms.

Now I’m older and getting ready for a storm is too much.  We placed the shutters by the windows and this evening I will install the front shutters, then Friday will try to install the rest.  It has been running 90-95 degrees daytime, so it ain’t going to be a quick job.  I was going to convert my generator to propane. But like everything else it just never happened. But, I have several full gas cans this time.

Most of the “experts” of full of it so I do not listen too closely to them.  Predictions for Irma were a complete joke.  Like “global warming” prediction; a complete fraud.

Now I know why this area of Florida is scarcely populated; from 2004 through 2017 we had 6 hurricanes and 6 tropical storms come through here, and now a big one approaches. Hum, we lived south of Miami for 24 years and had only one hurricane, Andrew. Guess we picked the wrong place to retire to, huh?   Tongue

Prayers up for ya byrdie..........and as I've told people before, the best, albeit an expensive, purchase you can ever make is a generator. We've suffered through hurricanes and loss of electricity and the humidity was a killer......as well as ice storms that snap electrical lines and being without power for way too long and we don't have a fireplace. It's worth every penny.

This isn't good at all. Irma ravaged my place in 2017. It took me 3-4 months working everyday to clean up my 5.60 acre, very wooded property. To add insult to injury, my Florida slash pines were heavily stressed and traumatized by the wind (breaking off many big branches). As such, the southern pine beetle were attracted to these pines many months later. The beetles carry a fungus that is death to the pines. So far I've had close to 40 pines cut down and removed (some by myself, most by a tree company). I still have about 20 dead pines still standing where the boom truck couldn't access. I expect much of these trees to come down if we get hit hard by Dorian.

Walt, how much do they charge to cut down a large pine tree?  I have one that needs to be gone.

Naturally, it depends on the size -- and how many you have cut down. Steve's Tree Service (who I use) gives me a quantity break because he took down 11 trees in one day. I've paid anywhere from between $250 to $900 a tree -- to include complete removal, but no stump grinding.

I had Steve's Tree Service here three days ago, and we walked my property so he could count the number of trees I wanted removed and palms trimmed. He was going to call me back with an estimate. But we talked this afternoon and decided to put everything off until after Dorian is out of the picture.

BTW, Steve's Tree Service is located on Washington Blvd. I think that's close to you! He could pop right over to give you a free estimate. Tell him Walt recommended him to you. Maybe I have some clout to get you a good deal (LOL!)!

…….5pm update.   New track parallels east coast. It's still early, and we really need this storm to move off shore.

Fox News Tampa Bay's meteorologist Paul Dellegato says at least one model indicates Dorian may make a right hand turn (abruptly) and skirt the coast, or possible farther out in the Atlantic.

I sure hope so, my property will be ravaged if Dorian tracks near it. Looking out for myself, I at least hope if Dorian comes ashore it will come at a latitude more northerly than mine, as then I would be on the weak side of the eye.

But whatever is the case, I will be thankful if my home, my wife, my self, and our three dogs aren't hurt.

Are you all going to leave if you think it will affect you?
